On 22 April 2025, the CRSES team joined Stellenbosch University students and staff in celebrating Earth Day 2025 with a meaningful Campus Walk and Clean-Up.
The energy was high as the group walked together across campus, picking up litter, having conversations, and showing that sustainability starts with simple, collective actions.
This year’s Earth Day theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” could not have been more fitting. It is a bold call to recognise the role of renewable energy in protecting our environment and creating a more sustainable future. For the CRSES, it is also a reminder that the work that is done everyday, in research, education, and collaboration contributes directly to this global mission.
The CRSES director, Professor Cristina Trois, was also interviewed live on SABC by Corbin August, where she spoke about the importance of Earth Day and how renewable energy can empower communities, protect natural resources, and create new opportunities, especially in the South African context.
The day was a wonderful reminder of the power of community and shared responsibility. Whether you were walking, cleaning, or simply showing up, every action mattered.
