The Stellenbosch University’s CRSES team participates in the second co-design workshop of the SOWU Project: A Sector Strategy for Organic Waste Management in Uganda, taking place from 26–30 May 2025. Hosted in Kampala, the five-day programme brings together experts and stakeholders to advance Uganda’s national strategy on organic waste, with a strong focus on integrated assessment modelling and community-led solutions.

Representing CRSES and the ARUA Centre of Excellence in Energy are Dr Andrea Dell’Orto and Dr John Edison Sempiira , who are attending in person, while Prof. Cristina Trois is contributing virtually. The workshop opened with GAINS model training by IIASA and the Climate and Clean Air Coalition, aiming to equip stakeholders with tools to estimate emissions and develop low-cost, high-impact mitigation strategies.

Sessions also include the launch of a Community of Practice on organic waste, the presentation of Uganda’s new Organic Waste Sorting Manual, and field visits to key waste management facilities.
