The Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies (CRSES) at Stellenbosch University had the honor of hosting the G20 Energy Transitions Working Group (ETWG) delegation as part of South Africa’s G20 Presidency on 30th April 2025. The visit formed a key part of the Second G20 ETWG Meeting and aimed to highlight South Africa’s leadership in clean energy research and innovation.

The international delegates, led by Prof Sampson Mamphweli, Head of the Energy Secretariat at Sanedi.org , were welcomed to the Stellenbosch University – Faculty of Engineering.

The programme commenced with opening remarks from Prof Sibusiso Moyo , Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research, Innovation and Postgraduate Studies, and Prof Celeste Viljoen, Vice-Dean: Teaching and Quality Assurance. This was followed by presentations from Prof Prof. Cristina Trois, Director of CRSES, and Prof Craig McGregor , Associate Director of CRSES, who outlined the Centre’s work in advancing energy transitions across Africa and beyond.

Delegates then embarked on guided tours of several laboratories within the Faculty of Engineering, offering an in-depth look at ongoing research and innovation, Electrical Engineering – HVDC, Electrical Machines/Wind Energy, E-Mobility in Industrial Engineering, and Chemical Engineering
