The Masia Village Water–Energy–Food (WEF) Nexus Project, implemented by the Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies (CRSES) at Stellenbosch University, received multiple recognitions at the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) Annual Energy Conference 2026, held from 24–26 February 2026.
The project was recognised for its contribution to sustainable development and community-based renewable energy innovation, receiving the Recognition for Innovation for Socio-Economic Impact Award, the Community Impact Award, and the Energy Efficiency Excellence Award.
Located in Masia Village in Limpopo, the project demonstrates an integrated Water–Energy–Food Nexus approach that combines renewable energy technologies with water supply systems and agricultural production. The initiative supports local livelihoods by improving access to reliable energy, enabling sustainable food production, and strengthening community resilience.
The work leading to these recognitions was undertaken by members of the CRSES team who were involved in the development and implementation of the project during their time at the Centre. Some of these contributors have since transitioned to the South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI), where they continue to contribute to advancing renewable energy initiatives in South Africa.
These awards highlight the importance of innovative, community-centred approaches to addressing energy, water, and food challenges while advancing South Africa’s broader sustainable development and energy transition goals.
CRSES congratulates all contributors involved in the project and acknowledges the continued value of initiatives such as the Masia Village WEF Nexus in demonstrating practical solutions that deliver meaningful socio-economic and environmental impact.
