Scope: The aim of this project was to provide Exxaro Resources with a solar resource report and PV yield report for their proposed 11 MW PV plant near Vryburg in the Northern Cape province of South Africa.
Status: Completed
CONTINUATION LEPHALALE MEASUREMENTS
Client: Exxaro
Scope: Stellenbosch University through the Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies (CRSES) is currently managing a solar measurement station for Exxaro in Lephalale.
This station has been managed from middle February 2010 to the end of February 2011. The aim of this project is to continue this service for another year (March 2011 – February 2012).
Status: Completed
ON SITE SOLAR INSOLATION MEASUREMENT &ndsh; DANIELSKUIL AND KIMBERLEY
Client: Afri Devo
Scope: On Site Solar Insolation Measurement for the purpose of installing a large PV and/or CSP plant at Daniëlskuil (Groenwater site) and Kimberley (Platfontein). DNI, GHI, OTI and Diffuse will be measured.
Stellenbosch University through the Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies (CRSES) has the required expertise and access to data-bases to execute such irradiation measurement and assessment projects. The aim of this project is to measure solar irradiation at two sites specified by the client and to correlate the data with the corresponding satellite data as well as with historic satellite data. Therefore, the client needs to have already performed a pre-feasibility study to identify a specific site where the solar resource needs to be characterised. Other weather data (wind, temperature, humidity, rainfall, etc.) will also be measured and can be used by CSP and/or PV project developers to design their plant.
Status: Completed
ON SITE SOLAR INSOLATION MEASUREMENTS - BOKPOORT
Client: Solafrica Thermal Energy Pty (Ltd)
Scope: The aim of this project is to continue with on-site solar measurements on Solafrica's Bokpoort site. A six and a twelfth month extension option is proposed.
Status: Completed
SOLAR AND WIND POTENTIAL STUDY OF SOUTH AFRICA (GRID STUDY)
Client: ESKOM
Scope: The Strategic Grid Planning Manager at Eskom Grid Planning contacted the Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies (CRSES) to conduct a study on solar and wind energy. The findings of this study will assist decision makers' grid planning strategies with focus on the integration of renewable energy forms.
Stellenbosch University through the Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies (CRSES) has the required expertise to conduct such a study. Furthermore, the CRSES has access to relevant solar data-bases and previous expertise with GIS to execute the solar component of the study. CRSES is less confident with wind energy, therefore a competent third party will assist with this section of the study. This partner will have access to the necessary accurate wind maps and data.
Status: Completed
ON SITE SOLAR MEASUREMENT &ndsh; NOUPOORT CPV SITE: INSTALLATION OF EQUIPMENT AND SITE VISITS
Client: Terra Solar Energy Pty (Ltd)
Scope: The aim of this project is to measure solar irradiation at a site specified by the client for at least six months. Other weather data (wind, temperature, humidity, rainfall, etc.) will also be measured. After six months of measurements the measured data will be correlated to long term satellite derived data. This quotation is for the installation of the equipment on site and managing the station for a period of six months by visiting the station every 2 months (3 visits during the period of 6 months).
Status: Completed
PRE-FEASIBILITY STUDY OF A CONCENTRATING SOLAR POWER (CSP) PLANT AT DISTELL
Client: Distell Group (Ltd)
Scope: A pre-feasibility analysis to construct and operate a concentrating solar power (CSP) plant, for electricity generation and/or process heat provision purposes, at one of the Distell sites in the Western Cape Province.
Status: Completed
PREFEASIBILITY OF SOLAR PROCESS HEAT FOR LONMIN LEACHING PROCESS
Client: Lonmin (Pty) Ltd
Scope: The proposed project is a prefeasibility study of the utilisation of solar energy for an industrial process heat. The outcome, in the form of a report, will provide specifications of the proposed system. A financial model will provide indicative costs and present financial metrics such as NPV (Net Present Value) and IRR (Internal Rate of Return). The selection of various scenarios will be investigated and interrogated with the client.
Status: Completed
MAINTENANCE OF SOLAR MEASUREMENT STATIONS IN THE NORTHERN CAPE
Client: Vexicom (Pty) Ltd
Scope: Aveng Engineering & Projects Company has recently installed two solar measurement stations in the Northern Cape. These stations use Kipp&Zonen solar trackers and solar sensors (pyrheliometer and pyranometers). The tracker and instruments require regular maintenance and cleaning.
Stellenbosch University, through the Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies, has the required expertise and experience in installing and maintaining such stations. The Centre currently monitors and maintains 8 such stations.
Status: Completed
LESOTHO SOLAR MEASUREMENT INSTALLATION AND PERSONNEL TRAINING - UNDP
Client: CS Africa
Scope: A recent tender was released by the UNDP on the acquisition and installation of three solar measurement stations in Lesotho and training of two Lesotho Meteorological Services (LMS) personnel in Maseru. A proposal was submitted by Campbell Scientific Africa (CSAfrica) where the hardware and some training will be provided by CSAfrica and the larger training and installation component be completed by CRSES.
Status: Completed
SUPPLY AND DELIVERY OF SOLAR RESOURCE MAPS AT THE DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND TOURISM
Client: KZN Economic Development
Scope: Stellenbosch University and the University of KwaZulu-Natal undertook a project to provide solar energy data and maps to the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development and Tourism, comprising of the following:
- aCustomised high-resolution, satellite-derived, digital solar radiometric datasets covering the Province of KwaZulu-Natal in geo-referenced ESRI ArcGIS format.
- bFull-colour satellite-derived poster maps in digital printing file format covering the Province of KwaZulu-Natal.
Status: Completed
CONTINUATION OF ON-SITE SOLAR INSOLATION MEASUREMENTS - BOKPOORT
Client: Solafrica
Scope: The aim of this project was to continue with on-site solar measurements on Solafrica's Bokpoort site for another six months. Data was collected and forwarded to the client in raw format. No reports and data analysis was performed as was done for previous projects. Data was downloaded on a regular basis and quality checked. The station was visited every 2 months.
Status: Completed
DE BEERS ON-VESSEL TECHNOLOGY OVERVIEW
Client: De Beers Marine
Scope: The De Beers Group has approached the Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies (CRSES) to assist and conduct concept scoping, formulation and evaluation of wave energy conversion (WEC) devices applicable to their marine mining operations.
The request from the client was to investigate concepts that specifically utilize the vessel as a platform to derive energy from its motion. The outcomes which were achieved here were to provide a list of possible concepts from which the most favourable can be chosen and then be further developed as research projects
