Professor Wikus van Niekerk

PROF WIKUS VAN NIEKERK

Director

Professor Wikus van Niekerk is the Director of the Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies at Stellenbosch University. He holds a PhD from the University of California at Berkeley in Mechanical Engineering. He has a keen interest in renewable and sustainable energy and has been consulted by industry for many years as a registered professional engineer.

Professor Alan Brent

PROF ALAN BRENT

Associate Director

Professor Alan Brent is a chemical engineer by background with Masters degrees in environmental sciences and technology management, and a PhD in engineering management. In 2009 he was appointed as a professor in the Sustainable Development programme of the School of Public Management and Planning (SOPMP) of Stellenbosch University, where he is also the associate director of the Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies. He is responsible for the renewable energy policy component of the Sustainable Development Planning and Management academic programme at the Sustainability Institute. His ongoing research efforts aim to improve the planning and management of sustainable technological systems.

Alejandro Lupion

ALEJANDRO LUPION

Lecturer

Mr. Alejandro Lupion is an Electro technical engineer from Neuchâtel University-Switzerland with a Master degree in efficiency and renewable energy from the Saragossa University-Spain. He has former experience in rural electrification/grid connection project management and in-company energy training. His current work is focus on wind energy and efficient O&M of power plant in the long term.

Ms Corli Leonard

MS CORLI LEONARD

Research Engineer

Ms. Corli Leonard holds a BEng degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Pretoria. She completed her MSc Engineering Management in 2010, specialising in aerospace quality assurance. Former work experience includes logistics in the automotive industry with the focus on the global supply chain management and also a research visit in Sweden as member of a team investigating the localisation of Volvo Aero Company’s supply chain network. Currently her focus is project management of the Centre's research projects.

Mr Eugéne Joubert

MR EUGÉNE JOUBERT

Research Engineer

Mr. Eugéne Joubert holds a MscEng degree in Mechanical Engineering from Stellenbosch University and is currently completing is PhD part-time. Past experience includes large scale atmospheric flow simulations, computational fluid dynamics, structural analysis and thermodynamics. His focus at CRSES involves design, simulation and analysis of solar thermal systems as well as geographic information systems (GIS).

Mr Ulrich Terblanche

MR ULRICH TERBLANCHE

Research Engineer

Mr. Ulrich Terblanche holds a BEng in Mechanical Engineering from Stellenbosch University. He completed his MSc degree in Sustainable Energy Engineering from the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm, Sweden. Former work experience includes project engineering and piping design in the oil and gas refining sector, analyses on using excess heat for district heating and electricity generation in the cement manufacturing industry as well as PV-hybrid systems and energy efficient design in the renewable energy sector. His focus includes sustainable energy solutions, industrial energy efficiency analyses and PV and hybrid system design.

Cebo Silinga holds a PDE (Mechanical) in Renewable and Sustainable Energy from Stellenbosch University. He is currently a M.Eng. (Mechanical) candidate from Stellenbosch University. His previous work experience includes Technical Project Management in the automotive industry. He has been involved in the modelling of Concentrating Solar Plants (CSP) with the main focus on peaking CSP plants

DR SAMEER HAMEER

Dr Hameer holds a PhD in Aerospace Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA where he obtained his degree on the 8th May of 2010. He has 2 publications in the Journal of Mechanical Engineering Research, Kenya in the year 2013. He is also a Professional Engineer in the field of Aeronautical Engineering recognized by the Tanzania Engineers Registration Board. He Specializes in the area of Hybrid Solar PV/Wind Systems.

Dr Atul Jadhav

DR ATUL JADHAV

Atul Jadhav was awarded PhD in physics on Feb. 2011 from Mumbai University, India. His PhD research project involved development of various solar thermal technologies. Previously he worked as a post doc researcher at Masdar Institute, Abu Dhabi. He has published and presented papers in the field of solar thermal energy in international journal as well as conference. He is currently working as a post-doctoral researcher at the Centre.
